Kate McCallum moved to Oregon from the United Kingdom five years ago, and immediately fell in love with the big trees and rich ecologies. She bought a small piece of land in Gales Creek shortly after it was logged, and has been working to replant it with healthy, diverse forest that she intends to steward for the rest of her life. Exploring the muddy land, she discovered a vein of thick, moldable clay, and embarked on a new exploration of ceramics, digging and processing the clay and learning to pit-fire it the ancient way. She has since branched out into using other clays as well, including commercial ones, but still works with the experimental, unpredictable art of pit-firing.
Kate studied sculpture in the UK (though never ceramics), and then went on to do an interdisciplinary PhD that brought together art practice, mathematics and linguistics. She now teaches classes on research, mathematics, and science and art, at Pacific Northwest College of Art, Pacific University, and Portland Community College.
